HOW IT STARTED
1996, Steve Rotolo (a professional actor in the Boston area) enrolls in a series of directing courses at Boston University's School For the Arts.
- 1997, the workshop productions become a template for a small ensemble theatre company.
- 1998, with Duncan McCulloch, Sheilagh Cruickshank & others, they decide to mount one of these workshop productions (LeRoi Jones one-act Dutchman) at Little Flags Theatre in Central Square, Cambridge.
Mission Statement
Molasses Tank Productions recognizes that theatre does not stand isolated as a static fine art form; rather, it involves, reflects, and influences our current and ever-changing culture. We hold that our enterprise in theatre can assume an active role in valuable cultural dialogues and foster a heightened awareness of the contemporary world. We want our work to entertain, but also to do more: through achieving artistic excellence, we seek to provoke insights and commentary, to offer experiences of emotional intensity, and to understand how we determine and pursue our social values and visions.
Molasses Tank Productions is an ensemble theatre group that attempts to make its performances contribute in a visible way to the quality of life in both the city and the region. We are dedicated to a rigorous exploration of ideas through in-depth rehearsals and close engagement with theatrical texts. We value the diversity of our city and seek to employ artists and to engage audiences from different backgrounds. We believe that the communicative power of theater should play a vital role in the health of our evolving community.
We seek to produce plays by recognized playwrights that have received few or infrequent local stagings, so that we may enrich and not replicate the theatrical offerings in Boston. We also seek the best new work by local and up-and-coming playwrights. Our highest aspiration is to make the finest drama accessible to our diverse community, so all may share and celebrate the varied and rich traditions of our theatre.
Molasses Tank Productions is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with tax-exempt status.
Molasses Tank Productions is sponsored in part through a grant from the Massachusets Cultural Council, an organization promoting excellence, education, access and diversity in the arts.
