I saw this DVD at a friend’s house and I just had to have it – it’s AWESOME and it deserves 5 stars. The reason for the one star is that when I received the DVD the cover said that it only plays on HD DVD players. Since I just spent close to $3000 on a HD 50 inch plasma TV and a home theater system to go with it, I did not think it was a problem. Well, I was WRONG. This HD DVD does NOT play on my DVD player – it is not compatible. I did not realize that I was getting the HD DVD version of this DVD. I want to order one that plays on my DVD player but I am hesitant – how will I know I will be getting the one that plays on the DVD player that I have? I cannot return it since it’s been opened so now I am stuck with a $20.00 DVD that I cannot play. I am very, very disappointed.

I purchsed this item but had to return because I did not realize it is for an HD DVD and you need an HD DVD player to see it. I bought for my husband but we have a regular DVD player and it was not compatible. Be careful and make sure you have the right format before purchasing this HD DVD.

I’LL BE QUITE FRANK ! I’M NOT A HUGE EWF FAN BUT I GREW UP ON CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY, THE EARLY MUSIC.THAT SAID, WHO IS THIS COVER BAND CALLED “CHICAGO” ? I TRIED TO WATCH THE CHICAGO PORTION OUT OF RESPECT FOR THEIR NAME, BUT I FELT LIKE THIS WAS NOT REALITY. WELL, THIS IS REALITY AND IF YOU WANT “CHICAGO” THIS IS WHATS LEFT. SAD BUT TRUE. I’LL BE TAKING THIS BACK AND TRADING IT IN TOMORROW. THE ONLY REASON I GAVE THIS 2 STARS IS FOR THE EFFORT AND ENERGY OF THE MUSICIANS……….

I was a bit skeptical about getting this, considering that Chicago has been a really cheesy act since, I guess 1976 (I’m NO fan of the corny ballads). I like their earlier, more adventurous work, a la Chicago V. Same goes for EWF. Seeing that there was a bunch of older gems had me pick it up.

Sonically, this is an amazing DVD, and the older gems are fantastic, from both bands. It opens with an incredible ‘Beginnings’. Other hot spots are ‘Free’ and ‘Call on Me’, “Shining Star’ and ‘Getaway’.

Now, here’s the problem that makes it impossible for me to watch the whole thing in one sitting… MAJOR CHEESE FACTOR. The way these bands portay themselves is soooooo hammy, between the on-stage high fivin’, pointing at random members of the audience, really corny canned dialogue, and general mugging and grinning. I don’t know, maybe if I thought the 80’s was a great decade I’d appreciate it. It’s like a bad Vegas show. It’s more akin to what you’d see at a Garth Brooks or Bon Jovi show. When the big American flag drops down behind the stage during ‘Free’ and the horn section ’salutes’, I wanted to puke (esp. considering that in their heyday, Chicago was quite politcal and anti-gov’t).

Content wise, about half of it’s great, the other half is pretty bad, esp. the Chicago ballads. So I’d say it’s worth a rent, but don’t know if it’s worth buying. That said, if you loved the 80’s and all that personified that decade, you’ll probably love this DVD.
