A fictional tale of people and puppets living together in the harsh enviorment of New York City streets, telling the story of all the generations of young hopeful adults who come to the big city to chase their dreams and find their identity as they become adults.

The show opened on July 10, 2003 at the Golden Theatre in the theater district of New York’s famed Broadway. The production is an original musical which has won praise from critics, bringing a breathe of fresh air to Broadway. The musical score includes great songs, mixed in with puppets and people dealing with the different problems, such as an internet addict and a sexual identy crisis. The storyline goes very deep into adult problems, as the idea of reading about puppets, you make think this is more of a light hearted event, however some dark issues are dealt with, all the while bringing you closer to the character, whether it be a human or a puppet.

Avenue Q made its official debut off Broadway at the Vineyard Theater, once critics and viewers began applauding it’s work, it was moved onto Broadway to the John Golden Theatre where the production continues to gain a fan base and sell out shows. Most who see the show feel it is the best production on broadway right now, and i would have to agree.

Avenue Q took home 4 Tony awards in 2003 including, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book. Avenue Q Broadway show tickets are currently on sale at an average price of sixty-four dollars per seat.

iPod in hand as I flick through the tracks I stop, the music begins to fill me head as I remember that same feeling as I did maybe 20 years ago.

London in the eighties there is nothing quite like going to London to see a musical, the excitement of that childhood trip I remember well. Early mornings here in Liverpool and the anticipation of the Pullman train journey down to Euston station in London when my father had to go on business.

My mother, sister and I were promised a trip shopping in London coupled with a musical. A sense of anticipation grew as the day went on, arriving at the Cumberland hotel while mother adorned in here fur coat discussed what seats were available for which shows. I guess it was about 1982 and a host of Andrew Lloyd Webber productions were being staged in the West End, Starlight Express, Sunset Boulevard, The Phantom of the Opera coupled with the rock musical Time or Mutiny on the Bounty. How times have changed.

Then little girls wore long dresses and ladies in cocktail dresses whilst the men wore black tie and evening jackets a really sense of occasion and like all young children my sister and I simply loved getting dresses up.

Finally the moment arrived seated in the centre circle waiting for the curtain to raise my sister on my left with mum and dad seated to my right , opera glasses in hand star struck waiting for the orchestra to play that first note. It mattered not which musical or even which theatre just those stage lights and that compelling tune that fills the theatre. On this occasion it happened to Sunset Boulevard and the curtained began to raise.

I knew from the very first time I watched my first musical that I would be a life long theatre goer and would dream of one day performing upon that stage. The music filled my head and my heart and the show began. There is no experience quiet like it and the glamour of the eighties theatre nights were there for everyone too see.

Before you knew where we were it was the interval, as the ladies and gentlemen flowed into the bar there was a silver tray with the name Warwick upon it our order already for us at the bar in the theatre, refreshments for all . Cigarettes and cigars lit the room filled with chatter of the performances while the air filled with the smell of cigars.

Five minutes ten minutes who knows soon we were seated back in our velvet seats again waiting for the final encounter. I will never forget the performance of an aged Hollywood star trying to deal with the end of the silent era a wonderful story moving and yet enlightening. The music seemed timeless and the experience will forever stick in my memory, ever show as memorable as the last ever performance unique.

Finally the audience raised the roof with applause standing clapping endlessness as the performers re-entered the stage to take there curtain call louder and louder the theatre rang with applause. Peering over the centre circle to take one last look at the stage I can remember that feeling a slight tear in my eye produced by happiness and a slight yawn as it was way past my bedtime. A family experience that once taken you would never forget.

As I lay in my bed that night I can remember seeing the lights and hearing the music melodically soothing me to sleep.

While there are many different things that go into building the perfect home theatre system, and many different ways of putting one together, all of them have one thing in common: amazing speakers that can the room in a rock song, or catch that creaking door in the horror movie you’re watching via surround sound. Whether you’re looking at a quality TV or an actual projection screen theatre, any and every model requires good speakers to carry the sound.

There are many different types of speaker systems that you can use in a home theatre. One of the most important things to know is that the higher the watt and ohm of the speaker, the greater the sound you get. The quality of volume and how much you can push the envelope is limited only by the patience of the neighbor most likely to call the cops.

There are so many types of speaker systems that literally hundreds of articles could be written on the subject. While well recognized brand names can put out great speakers and speaker systems, pay attention to the less well known brands, as well, because some of those speakers may be just as good, and several hundred dollars cheaper.

When choosing out speaker systems, don’t forget the surround sound! One of the best effects of a home theatre speaker system is when the surround sound is perfectly attended to. This brings a dimension to movies most people have never experienced . . . since even many people with a home theatre system don’t have the surround sound set up appropriately.

When you are deciding on what theatre speakers to buy, keep the arrangement details in mind. The basic common home theater set up is a screen at one end of the room, one central speaker, one speaker flanking each side of the screen, two speakers providing surround sound on the left and right, and sometimes a speaker adding surround sound from the rear (absolutely great for either war or horror movies).

If you decide to arrange your room this way, chances are good that you will have excellent sound added to your home theatre system, and this makes speaker placement relatively simple if you are in a large room without much confusion. In the ideal situation, the front speakers are the same height from the ground, usually either slightly above or slightly below the display, and the surround speakers should be at least one and a half feet above the heads of the viewers. A lot of people mess this detail up.

The decision on home theatre speakers is an important one, especially if you want to be oriented towards movie watching. A DVD of a movie such as Braveheart is amazing when you can hear each individual bow string twang, and the sound of arrows displacing air. When the surround sound is on at full blast all over the room, that’s an experience you don’t soon forget, and neither will your all your friends gushing about your system to everyone they know!

SURVEILLANCE AND STERILISATION OF OPERATIon THEATRES

           In the Developing World

       Dr.T.V.Rao MD – Dr.Chithra.VN MD

In spite of brief stay of patients in the operation theatre (in majority of circumstances), the environment of operation theatre plays a great role in the onset and spread of infection because of a multifactor causation of infection. It is usually necessary to study the epidemiology of infection as a multidisciplinary approach. In resource poor circumstances as in most developing countries, work in isolation and few facilities to make any epidemiological surveys Many believe that routine Microbiological monitoring is most essential but in reality it is not practicable. But every hospital should pay good attention in proper maintenance of air conditioning plants, ventilator systems, and to have greater control on mechanisms and personnel involved in disinfection and sterilization of materials used in the theatres in operative procedures.

Operation theatres should be built with implementation of good civil Engineering standards.

OPERATION THEATRE – DISCIPLINE

1. Only people absolutely needed for an assigned work should be present.

2. People present in theatre should make minimal movements and curtail unnecessary movements in and out of theatres, which will greatly reduce bacterial count.

3. Air borne contamination is usually affected by type of surgery, quality of air which in fact depends on rate of air exchange.

All the persons including the least cadre of employers are partners in infection control and should be aware to comply with infection control regulations

4 Prompt disposal of Theatre waste out of the theatre is of top priority. Any spillage of Body fluids including Blood on the floors is highly hazardous and prompts the rapid multiplication of Nosocomial pathogens in particular Pseudomonas spp

SURVEILLANCE OF OPERATION THEATRE

Role of Microbiological Surveillance

The environments in the operation theatre are dynamic and subject to continuous change. Good infrastructures do not mean a safe environment as human make a greater difference in making the environment unsafe.

Microbiologists should be aware of organisms, sites and populations as surveillance cultures should be chosen carefully to allow meaningful interpretation of results.

Microbiologists should be familiar with the clinical techniques as those normally used for culturing clinical specimens may not yield correct result when applied to environmental specimens.

Sites and cultured reports should not be chosen as etiological sources in the present infections. Culturing unnecessary surface areas causes confusion and meaningful interpretation is lost.

AIR IS THE IMPORTANT SOURCE OF INFECTION

Bacterial counts in operation theatres are influenced by the number of individuals present, ventilation and air flow, the results should be interpreted taking the above facts into consideration.

   Surveillance for Air borne Pathogens:

In resource poor Hospitals settle plates with blood agar are used and can detect pathogens, commensals and saprophytic bacteria. Multiple plates are kept and results are based on overall assessment rather than on a single plate study in the room. Microbiologists will clarify the acceptable counts at the different physical locations in multispeciality hospitals.

There is a sea change in analysis of bacterial counts in recent past with advances in medical technologies like Joint replacement surgeries dealing with critical patients. Slit sampler and Air centrifuge equipment for bacterial counts are replacing settle plates, the safe level of colony counts can be calculated as per the standards created with peer reviewed studies by the manufacturers.

How frequently we can do the Surveillance for Air borne Microbes.

Yet there is no definite answer to this question

Doing too frequent surveys are expensive and will not correlate the existing infection rate in the Hospital.

But can indicate the circumstance we operate which can have bearing effect if the safety standards fall

Surveillance for Clostridia spores

The age old tradition of detection of anaerobic spores of C.tetani, and Gas gangrene producing organisms are losing ground with onset of more awareness on theatre sterilization. Routine testing for the Anaerobes is not essential except when there were suspected cases of Tetanus or Gas gangrene attributed to operating in a particular Operation theatre.

But it is ideal to survey the Operation theatres for anaerobes when newly constructed or any remodeling or structural alterations are done. In such situations which will have trust worthy safety of the theatre.

STERILISATION AND DISINFECTION OF OPERATION THEATRES AND CRITICAL CARE AREAS

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1.	Keep the floor dry when in use.

2.	Use only vacuum cleaners (booming to be forbidden as it will dispense the infected material all around and on the equipments.

3.	Chemical disinfection of an operation room floor is probably unnecessary. The bacteria carrying particles already on the floor are unlikely to reach an open wound in sufficient numbers to cause an infection

(Ayliffe et al 1967. Hombroeus et al 1978)

Cleaning alone followed by drying will considerably reduce bacterial population.

4.	Wall and Ceilings- Wall and ceiling are rarely contaminated. The numbers of bacteria do not appear to increase even if walls are not cleaned. Frequent cleaning is not necessary and has little influence on bacterial counts. Routine disinfection is therefore unnecessary, but only cleaned when dirty.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANING OF OPERATION THEATRES

At the Beginning of the Day

1.	Only remove the dust with cloth wetted with clean water. ( Mop theatre furniture lamps, sitting tables, trolley tops, operation tables, procedure tables, Boyle’s apparatus)

Note: Need not use chemicals/disinfectants unless contaminated with blood or body fluids

Between the procedures

Clean operation tables or contaminated surfaces with disinfectant solutions.

1. In case of spillages of blood/ body fluids decontaminate with bleaching solution/ chlorine solution (10% available chlorine)

     2. All discard waste in plastic bags (do not accumulate around surgical sites)

3.	Do not discard soiled linen and gowns in the operation theatre floor.

At the end of the day

1.	Clean all the table tops, sinks, door handles with detergent followed by low level disinfectant.

2.	Clean the floors with detergents mixed with warm water.

3.	Finally mop with disinfectant like phenol in the concentration of 1 in 10 (low concentrations of phenol will not serve the purpose).

4. Keep the operation theatre dry for the next day’s work

Fumigation

1. Seal the room with adhesive tapes round the edges of the doors/windows and ventilators and apertures.

2 For Each 1000 cu.ft of space place 500ml formaldehyde (40% solution) and 1000ml of water in an electric boiler. Switch on the boiler, leave the room and seal the door.

3. Seal the room for 24 hrs

4. Then open the door and neutralize any residual formaldehyde with ammonia by exposing 250ml of S.G 880 ammonia/ 1Lt of formaldehyde used. (Ref – Mackie and McCartney Practical Medical Microbiology 13th Edition)

5. Fumigation is obsolete in many developed nations in view of toxic nature of Formalin. Too frequent use and inhalation is hazardous

6 Several new safe chemicals are emerging but constrains of economy limit the use and several hours of closure of operation theatres can be curtailed with Fumigation.

THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS HAVE GREATLY REDUCED THE RATES OF INFECTION

     1. Every Hospital must constitute Infection control committee to monitor the events in the Hospital, on all matters related to control of Infections.

     2. The entry of unnecessary personnel to be restricted into operation theatres as every one contributes to Infection.

      3. A thorough washing with warm water and good detergent and carbolisation can bring overall improvement than mere fumigation.

      4. Frequent monitoring and training of medical and paramedical staff must carry high priority than mere mechanical and chemical methods.

      5. Thorough washing and carbolisation if done everyday after the surgeries will greatly enhance the safety standards and economize the repeated expenditure on fumigation.

TRAINING OF PARAMEDICAL STAFF/ RESIDENTS

1.	The short solution to control infection lies with trained staff.

2.	The principal and control of infection to all new comers and junior staff should be a goal of any good Institution.

3.	Formulate guidelines update as per the changing situation in control the infection.

4.	Institute should formulate ideas on infection control to the need of circumstances, as there are no fixed guidelines or formulae to control to suit all occasional.

5.	Simple repeated hygienic hand wash is most cost effective method to reduce several infections in Hospitals, in particular operation theatres

                     Note

The knowledge on Maintenance, Sterilization and control of Infections in Operation theatres a rapidly evolving Science

Wish to know more about Operation theatre Maintenance for control of Infection Read through

Principles, And Practice of Disinfection, Preservation and Sterilization by A.D.Russel, W.B.Hugo & G.A.J Ayliffe.

All Institutes wish to develop to improve hygiene and sterilization standards, and start critical surgeries doing Cardiothoracic, Organ replacement and prosthetic surgeries should subscribe to the internationally accredited Journal

“The Operating Theatre journal” published from U K.

When David Hampton—the notoriously raffish con man who inspired Guare’s most popular play—died of AIDS complications in 2003, The New York Times quoted one of his last victims. The man had gone on a date with Hampton in 2001, during which the swindler managed to finagle $1,000 for a phony September 11 celebrity benefit before sneaking off, leaving his date with a $423 dinner tab. But “Honestly?” said the mark. “It was one of the best dates that I ever went on.”

Evidently, Hampton maintained his beguiling knack for separating urbanites from their money long after Guare dramatized, in 1990, Hampton’s most impressive scam, that of persuading members of Manhattan’s upper crust to take him in as the son of Sidney Poitier. Of course, Guare is interested in more than the attractions of one con artist; he uses the story both to poke fun at and commiserate with his real subject: the well-meaning but somewhat lost liberal rich.

The play’s success in performance hinges on whether we buy that Paul (the Hampton character) could charm the pants and pocketbook off pretty much anyone. On that account, Marra’s otherwise lively production fails: Engelen brings to the character a childlike sincerity that justifies the older characters’ parental concern for him, yet there’s nothing irresistibly seductive about his Paul. As the principal scamees, Griffith and Steinhagen display some comic timing but lack the necessary air of patrician breeding troubled by liberal guilt.

The O2 Arena London

The O2 arena is an America-style, multi-purpose venue in London. It has a capacity of 20,000, although the area also houses Indigo2, a 2,350 capacity event space considered a more intimate concert venue. This venue and the facilities it offers are contained within a dome structure, currently known as O2 and formerly known as the Millennium Dome. This structure was completed in June of 1999.

Since it would have been impossible to use cranes from within the O2 dome structure, the roof of the arena was actually constructed on the ground of the venue and lifted upon completion, allowing the rest of the arena to be built around the already completed roof. The O2 arena, despite having only been open since 2007, has already played host to several music and sporting events.

The arena is comprised of three seating areas, the upper and lower tiers, built in the same manner as an amphitheatre, and the floor. Arena management claims there is a clear view to be had from any seat in the arena. The arena is also located in a low emission zone in London and, as such, was designed to be environmentally friendly. Within the venue, steps are taken to reduce carbon emissions. Some of these steps include recycling used cooking oil from the food vendors and composting waste food.

The first performance in the O2 arena, which took place June 23, 2007, was an event strictly for the O2 staff. The “O2 Premiere” private event consisted of performances by Peter Kay, Tom Jones, Kaiser Chiefs and Basement Jaxx. The venue opened to the public June 24, 2007, with a concert performed by Bon Jovi.
On Dec. 10, 2007, Led Zepplin played their first show in 25 years at the arena. Five days later, on Dec. 25, the Spice Girls played their first British concert in almost 10 years in their original five-piece group form at the arena.

In April of the next year, the Olympic torch passed the site during its relay in London and the arena hosted WWE tapings for ECW, SmackDown, and Raw; and in August, Tiësto became the first DJ to entirely sell out the venue in advance of the actual show.

The arena has hosted, aside from sporting events including ice skating, wrestling and boxing, several musical acts, including The Eagles, Prince, Smashing Pumpkins, and Justin Timberlake.

Since its opening, the entire O2 structure has been shown at several times in several different movie and television presentations. In the 2005 film “Green Street,” the O2 can be seen during the final fight scene. In 2006’s “The Da Vinci Code,” the O2 is featured prominently in the background during one sequence. In the James Bond film “The World is Not Enough,” the O2 was the structure that aided James Bond in reaching his hot air balloon destination. In season seven of “The Amazing Race,” the O2 was the location of a roadblock for the contestants, during which they had to properly drive a double-decker bus.

See Joseph at London\’s Historic Adelphi Theatre

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is currently playing at the Adelphi Theatre. Joseph is a dramatization of the Bible story of Joseph, beginning with his brothers’ jealousy of Joseph’s coat of many colors and the sale of Joseph into slavery in Egypt. The story ends when Joseph is reunited with his father and brothers. Even though the story is straight out of the Bible, God is not mentioned at all in the show. Joseph is performed without any dialogue at all. The entire story is told through music and singing.

Actor Lee Mead is currently playing the title role. Mead will continue playing Joseph until January 10, 2009, after which time his understudy Ricky Rojas will take over until the new Joseph, Gareth Gates, steps into the role on February 9. Gates is a former Pop Idol finalist who recently performed with ITV’s Dancing on Ice. Joseph is showing at the Adelphi Theatre weekly through July 18.

London’s Adelphi Theatre has been providing entertainment for audiences since 1806. It was established by a businessman named John Scott and his daughter, Jane. Jane was a playwright who also performed in the theatre. She wrote over 50 dramatic pieces in a variety of genres.

Originally called the Sans Pareil, which means “without compare,” the theatre has been known by many names. It was renamed after the nearby Adelphi Buildings in 1819, and has also been called the Theatre Royal Adelphi, The New Adelphi and, for a few years after the turn of the twentieth century, The Century Theatre.

It has hosted many musicals and comedies, as well as several ghostly melodramas written by Charles Dickens and other writers. The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain was the most famous of Dickens’ haunted tales that was performed at the Adelphi Theatre. Adaptations of many of Dickens’s novels, including A Christmas Carol and The Pickwick Papers, were also performed at the Adelphi.

The Adelphi’s history of haunting melodramas is fitting, since it is rumored that the Adelphi itself is haunted. Actor William Terriss, who was stabbed to death outside the theatre in 1897, has been said to haunt some of the theatre’s backstage areas. Terriss was killed by his protégé, Richard Archer Prince. A plaque commemorating Terriss hangs on the back wall of the theatre.
The Adelphi was originally a small, cramped theatre. As the venue where many of Dickens’s novel adaptations were performed, the theatre grew in popularity and eventually needed more space. The too-small Adelphi was torn down and a larger, 1500-seat structure was built in its place, opening in 1858. Since then, the theatre has been rebuilt twice more, in 1901 and 1930. The current structure seats 1550 people.

The Adelphi Theatre is located near Charing Cross Station, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. The stage door is on Maiden Lane, at the rear of the building. The theatre is air conditioned and offers three levels of seating.

London Palladium Showing the Sound of Music and Sister Act

he classic musical, The Sound of Music, is showing at the London Palladium through February 28, 2009. Summer Strallen plays the role of Maria, singing such songs as The Sound of Music and My Favorite Things. Beginning in July, The Sound of Music will go on tour in the UK with Connie Fisher playing Maria.

After The Sound of Music has finished its run, the London Palladium will be gearing up for the performance of Sister Act. The musical version of Sister Act is based on the movie, which starred Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris, a Reno singer who witnesses a crime and is placed in the witness protection program. The police place her in a convent in the guise of a nun, and Deloris proceeds to revolutionize the convent’s choir program. Whoopi Goldberg will be producing the show, but she will not play the lead.

The London Palladium has an interesting history. It began as a wooden building called the Corinthian Bazaar, which had a strange attraction – a house for birds. After the Corinthian Bazaar closed, it was rebuilt and used to host a circus, and later an ice skating rink, which operated for ten years. After the ice skating rink closed down, the building was redesigned by Frank Matcham.

Beginning in 1945, Val Parnell began booking a number of big name acts. Some of the performers who were booked at the Palladium during this time were Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Sammy Davis, Jr.
In 1955, the London Palladium became the venue for a variety show that was broadcast live each week. The show was called Sunday Night at the London Palladium and ran until 1967. The Palladium hosted another variety show in the late 1980’s. This show was called Live from the Palladium.

Recent shows at the Palladium include Sinatra at the London Palladium in 2006, Scrooge: The Musical in 2005 and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2002. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has been the London Palladium’s most successful production. It ran for three and a half years.

Some people claim that the London Palladium is haunted by a woman wearing a crinoline dress. She is said to appear on the Palladium’s Crimson Staircase, usually when the theatre is nearly empty and the only people around are members of the staff.

The theatre seats 2,286 people and is air conditioned. There are three levels of seating at the Palladium: stalls, Royal Circle and Upper Circle. The stalls offer good views, except for the last six rows, and the view is also good from the Royal Circle. The view from the Upper Circle is lessened due to the height. In rows A and B it may be necessary to lean to see over the handrail. However, these seats are priced lower accordingly.

The London Palladium is located on Argyll Street, near Oxford Street and Soho. The stage door is located on Great Marlborough Street.
